I would be listening to a piece of writing by James Joyce and be looking at scientific photographs of heads from the 19th century. The idea that i am looking at is the juxtaposition of language. The power of two different sets of thoughts placed together as one. In this case i have used a 'The Ballad Of Persse O'Reilly' by James Joyce and an article from this saturdays guardian about 'OMG: Kirstie Allsop Caught on Twitter'. I have used the first four words of each alternate line and placed them together. This can also allude to the surrealist automatic writing technique, but i am interested how dfferent sets of languages from completely different context and times read together. I want to explore this for the exhibition on the theme 'Sentence'.

<img style="display:block; The dictionary had to contain forty words, in whatever way i chose to represent. I wanted to keep literal and in focus upon something that can be used and is useful. Paper and paper sizes are something that have always been of a concern in terms of what size i want to work with and what would be best for the printed outcome. I wanted to represent paper dimensions physically. Within this poster i have taken an image of the installation an represented it as a piece of information. The information follows the same system as the installation itself. I have also used the typeface DIN Mittelschrift for its clarity.

Poster held by Alexandra Victoria Connor

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 302px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H6WtAZf77_w/Siw9lK_1DJI/AAAAAAAAAKs/khNZk29hpT0/s400/IMG_4346-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344714566598462610" />

Dandyism

Project by my friend Rokas Rach which i was asked to model as a modern day dandy. They are all a personal response to what each person in the group was investigating. By taking the dimensions of the shacks i decided i couldnt represent the plot in anyway realistically, so i made scale models of the shacks at 1:40 and drew studies of them in different positions. What i wanted to communicate is the idea of scale, taking drawings directly from proportionally correct models showed what the area could be.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H6WtAZf77_w/SiBBwiM2xuI/AAAAAAAAAFk/T2ej1Nk5Xwo/s320/Dungeness.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341341460131661538" />

Dungeness: Mapping A Bleak Landscape

A graphics trip to Dungeness earlier on in May, we were given the brief to explore a 10 X 10 m spot among the huge expanse. All the information had to be recorded, sound, dimensions, colour, structure, terrain, objects, relationships, geology and the effects of weathering. Individually we investigated a different subject where i was recording the dimensions of the structures in the space. The shacks and the winch that can be seen in the photographs. What was interesting about investigating such a small plot in such a huge area was that it was an attempt to understand something about Dungeness. Its completely bleak landscape, with only an ominous power station in the back drop and the few houses to line the road.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H6WtAZf77_w/SiA4f5c_j1I/AAAAAAAAAFc/vlXefO3sHC4/s320/Dungeness+Space.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341331278710935378" />

Destruction and Use Of The Dictionary

Charlie was considering how my dictionary could be used in the wider context. The wider context being how the viewer can interact and play with the dictionary. We discussed how if a fan was used how the paper would react with one another and if this were filmed for however long, would communicate the relationship more physically. Shame i didnt get round to trying this out, but it would have produced a comparison between the paper sizes, moving in between one another that the viewer could have engaged with more interest.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 193px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H6WtAZf77_w/SiATHhxI0vI/AAAAAAAAAFM/0sUS6CDbeMY/s320/IMG_3892.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341290178105889522" />

Dictionary Of Paper Sizes

The brief was to design a dictionary of 40 words on any theme that i wanted to choose. I began by considering the functionality and the purpose of the standard dictionary, the fact that it is plainly useful. What i wanted to explore was how to create a dictionary that can actually be used and be of use to someone. Secondly it was important to consider how it would communicate visually. The idea of paper sizes is general and obvious and choice, but i felt that i hadnt ever seen a true comparison between the various paper sizes that are available to us. There is true physicality about paper and the way it feels, prints and responds a huge amount of tasks.

By creating an installation i felt i could compare the paper sizes i had collected, ranging from 458 X 648 mm (C2) to 31 X 44 mm (B10). What needs to be developed is an actual system for this piece and how it can be used.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 203px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H6WtAZf77_w/SiAQFtiJnTI/AAAAAAAAAFE/IpU4Ol4Od-Q/s320/IMG_3779.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341286848369630514" />

A Book That List Words

Peter Saville created this colour coded alphabet taken from 19th century Fantin-Latour flower painting he had spotted as a postcard in the National Gallery shop. The colours where taken directly from that of the flower.

A dictionary is a a book that list words of a language in alphabetical order and gives their meaning. These words can be perceived as images as well as typographically. What Saville has created is away of seeing these words. Words: a single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing, used with others (or sometimes alone) to form a sentence and typically shown with a space on either side when written or printed.

A means of showing these words, describing these words. Its a combination of such a simple idea involving projecting the film on top of the models body with the heart warming sound of Shirley Bassey's voice over the top make this 2 minutes 50 seconds the best. The gold colours and the juxtaposition of the models body are all just purely sexy which also add to the allure. Also the san serif which is quite possible Helvetica is clear and legible through out.

One Minute Of You Time

Alex Reuben a film maker based in Brazil has a set a 4 day film project 'One minute of your time'. The idea of creating something precious. We have been considering how perspective in terms of scale and depth can be used how it will be perceived. How you can use perspective has just a means of expression. Have a projection on top of a projection with no level of depth what so ever. This is one of his short films, i will be researching moving image alot more from now on and how it can communicate different ideas and on what sort of scale.

Watching Graham Norton being filmed earlier at the South-bank Studios (also the home of Loose Women and GMTv) it was interesting to experience a live set and how cameras, lighting and movement all fit into one space to form a program. It is clear that a hell of a lot more prior preparation went into creating the set and post production then the filming of the show itself. To see a system that work efficiently and productively. type='text'>Bernd and Hilla Becher

They wanted to reject the post war subjective, sentimental aesthetic returning back to the industrial, scientific representation of systems established within the 1920's and 30's. It is an exploration into a world built by humans and run by them, they look like futuristic cities. Quite desolate though, empty and unused reflecting a bygone time where these machines would have had use. Im not interested in their original but their anatomy. Not as illustrations either but as an idea of form. I cant help but remember how i felt when i drove past one of these structures on the journey to Amsterdam, i just stayed within view for about half an hour as we drove through Belgium. Like in the photos they were still lifeless objects. In europe there are places that i dream of living this is one of them. This photograph for the Financial Times is printed CMYK straight onto their beautiful pink stock, making the whites a salmon pink and purple (wish i knew the pantone mixtures) combined with the use of the Miller Display Light typeface really does wonders for this article.
i could dream

Application

Im realising and discovering more and more about the idea of application. It is one of the most important aspects when considering the context of certain elements.I have considered a quick application for X Marks The Spot within the idea of advertisement, focusing on the Playstation.

The advert is placed within the box on the shop wall. The grayscale image shows the triangle, circle, square and cross all together. Above i have inputed the Playstation logo four times to the colours found on the shapes on the Playstation controller. It is taking both elements out of context firstly by placing an image of the components of the controller and then repeating the logo four times instead of being singular depicting the four different colours. The composition has the photo on the base this is because it emphasises the actual components of the Playstation being the four colours on the controller. This really is just a quick idea but it shows how different elements can be used to fit in with a certain application.

X Marks The Spot

Taking a visit round the Barbican Centre, i photographed Squares, Circles, Crosses and Triangles wherever i could find them. Sometimes you get these incredible moments that will remind you of a place for a very long time.

Guardian Layout

The project: The Digital City , where i explored the signifance of market places situated around the south east of London. What i wanted to focus on is the structure, demographic and the initial impact these markets have on the surrounding area. The exploration took me around East Gate, Brixton, Borough, Greenwich, Deptford and Bermondsey Antiques Market. At each different market the merchants had entirely different attitudes to me documenting them. Some were incredibly enthusiastic some were not. However, my aim was not to antagonise but to encapsulate a sense of what these markets are about.

This was then placed into the context of The Guardian newspaper to give the final documentation a cohesive conclusion.

A New Phase

Good morning, this blog is the beginning of a new phase. It is really to help me understand what on earth the term Graphic Design might mean and to show things that i am currently working on. Somehow i will try and make sense of it all.
